The Downtown of Alma will be seeing some improvements in the summers of
2007, with a mill and surface project and a streetscape and mill and surface project in 2008. In
the summer of 2007 MDOT has scheduled a mill and resurfacing of Superior Street from the west side
of Prospect to Wright Avenue. The MDOT funds used in this portion of the project come from a
different source then the funds to be used in 2008 on the streetscape improvements. It is important
to have this section of Superior completed this summer or take the chance of losing these dollars.
Check back to this site for more information on the scheduling of this project.
The Alma DDA and the City of Alma have been awarded a Transportation Enhancement Grant from MDOT for
streetscape improvement at the intersections of Gratiot Avenue, Woodworth Avenue, Prospect Avenue,
and Park Avenue. The proposed work is concentrated to improve aesthetics and safety of pedestrian
crossings at the fore mentioned intersections in downtown. The streetscape elements include stamped
and colored concrete crosswalks, historically significant street lights, decorative pavers, planters,
and tree grates. The project will be constructed in conjunction with the remainder of the MDOT mill
and resurface of Superior Street in 2008. The project budget is $512,599, of which $410,079 is
funded with TE funds, and $102,520 from MDOT. The City of Alma will be contributing $155,100 in
non-participating project costs, which includes curb and gutter for the bump-outs as part of this
project.
If you have any questions about the above projects please contact the Alma DDA office.
