Alma DDA Meeting - October 5, 2006 Date: October 5, 2006
Alma Downtown Development Authority Alma, Michigan October 5, 2006 The regular meeting of the Alma Downtown Development Authority (ADDA) was called to order at 7:35 a.m. by Chairperson Shafley at The Book Shoppe 316 N State Street. PRESENT: Solomon, Kline, Shafley, Lowe, Stacey, Dancer, Ahern, Freed, Comer. ABSENT: Kolar. ALSO PRESENT: A. Ripley. Motion by Stacey, supported by Solomon to approve the minutes of the last regular meeting of September 14, 2006 as submitted. YES: Solomon, Kline, Shafley, Lowe, Stacey, Dancer, Ahern, Freed, Comer. NO: None. Public Input & Discussion: • None. Report from September 22, 2006 AAA meeting: Upcoming events: • October 12th – Chamber Board Retreat 7:00am – 12:00noon. • Come Home to Alma for the Holidays – Still need homes for this year and next. • Flowers Downtown – Bob Eldridge – recommended looking at taking out the boxes where the trees are too big to plant flowers in. Maybe do less boxes but more dramatic. • Shafley suggested that the boxes be left in and let the businesses that want to plant flowers do so and water them. • Leadership Gratiot has begun with 23 students, with a youth component with 12 students (2from each area District) Alma DDA Financials • DDA Financials were received. • New line item under revenues which shows the building at 113 W Superior as an asset to the DDA. Director’s Report: Streetscape Application • The City Commission reviewed the proposal for the streetscape improvements at the September 26th meeting. • Next summer MDOT plans to mill and resurface Superior Street. This is a good time to make the intersection improvements at Gratiot, Woodworth, Prospect, and Park. • The estimated project costs are $894,223.20, with a match from the City of Alma for the non-participating items of $125,204, for drainage work, and parking lanes. • The commission will vote on October 10th to support or not support the project. Façade Grant Application • The Façade Grant Application was dropped off to the MSHDA office in Lansing on September 14th. • The application is moving well the CATeam (community assistance team) members visited Alma last week. • Hope to learn something by October. • Kline – The time frames for the façade grants have been very tight. It would be a good idea to let the property owners know this money is out there and to get some projects around, so when the money does become available again same owners can be ready. • The director will be together a draft letter for next month’s meeting for board review. Demolition Riverfront • The Riverfront Demolition bid opening is set for October 11th. The pre-bid walk through took place on September 19th and 12 contractor were in attendance. • The old middle school is set for demolition before the first of the year. Other Business: Solomon – there has been a number of cars making u-turns on Superior Street. The time this seems to be most prevalent is in the morning hours around 9:30am. DDA Director will contact the Public Safety Director and see if some more patrols can be in downtown around this time period. • Adjournment 12:45 pm YES: Solomon, Kline, Shafley, Lowe, Stacey, Dancer.
