Alma DDA Meeting - June 14, 2007 Date: June 14, 2007
Alma Downtown Development Authority Alma, Michigan June 14, 2007 The regular meeting of the Alma Downtown Development Authority (ADDA) was called to order at 7:00 am by Vice Chairperson Stacey at The Book Shoppe 316 N State Street. PRESENT: Solomon, Comer, Lowe, Freed, Dance, Stacey. ABSENT: Kolar, Ahern, Kline. ALSO PRESENT: A. Ripley. Motion by Lowe, supported by Dancer to approve the minutes of the last regular meeting of May 10, 2007as submitted. Public Input & Discussion: • None. AAA meeting in May 25, 2007 Items Discussed: • Alma Highland Festival/Chamber Beer tent is looking for volunteers for the Friday evening. The Alma Action Meat Pie Booth will be located in its original spot, with the other vendors. • Downtown flower planting- business owners purchased their own flowers and will maintain them through the summer. Only 12 boxes were not planted. • Founders Day- Brochures were delivered to downtown businesses, Glen’s and Larry’s IGA inserted brochures in bags and the brochures were added to the Alma DDA website. Next year brochure needs to be prepared early to be delivered with community calendars. • A donation was made to Evening in the Parks for $150.00. • The Alma Highland Festival was on the front cover of the Michigan History Magazine, with a ten page write up on the 40th annual Festival. Alma DDA Financials • Accepted as presented. Director’s Report: Streetscape/Superior Resurface • The public meeting to discuss the project was held on May 16, 2007. At the meeting were two members from ROWE Inc, one MDOT rep, four DDA board members and three from the general public and three city staff. • The discussion focused on the timeline for the improvements. • The group preferred the idea of have the project started and completed before the Highland Festival and doing the mill and resurface of Superior Street at night. • Communication with the neighborhood will be made once a decision is made. Improvements at 113 W Superior Street • The brick façade restoration was completed on June 1, 2007 by Northern Restoration. • Between 113 and 111 W Superior there was a total of 4400 bricks replaced. • Otterskin Roofing will begin work on the south lower roof in July. • The windows have been ordered and Advanced Glass will be installing them in July. • Heather Raye’s Formal will do the floor and remove a couple of walls. The DDA will replace ceiling tiles and do the work on the bathroom that has been caused by the south roof leaking. Riverfront Demolition • There is little left of the former Alma Iron and Metal buildings. • After demolition is completed the site will be graded and seeded and a chain link fence will be installed as a due care measure required by the DEQ. • The City of Alma is currently working with CSX rail road to purchase the property. • The next step is to do soil removal on the former AIM and CSX site. This project is to be paid for by and EPA grant in the amount of $400,000. New Board Member • Board member Andy Shafley did not renew his position on the DDA board. • To keep someone from Commercial Bank on the board he suggested Corey Bailey. Corey is interested and to have Corey on the board by the next meeting the City Commission must appoint him to the board. Motion by Lowe, supported by Dancer to recommend to the City Commission the appointment of Corey Bailey to the Alma DDA Board for the four year term. Yes: Solomon, Comer, Lowe, Freed, Dance, Stacey. No: None. Other Business: Solomon suggested an idea for the AAA golf outing: in Mt. Pleasant they did a golf ball drop from the bucket of a fire truck. They group sold golf balls for $10 each and the balls were then dropped from the bucket and the closest ball to the hole won the 50/50 pot. Nichols Financial Group has purchased the former Tropical Fish Center building next door and will be tearing it down in July. • Adjournment 8:00 am YES: Solomon, Comer, Lowe, Freed, Dance, Stacey.
